Physical and Chemical Properties
Sodium hypo chlorite is a chemical,compound with the formula NaOCl or NaClO, comprising a sodium cation (Na+) and a hypochlorite anion (OCl−or ClO−). It may also be viewed as the sodium salt of hypochlorous,acid. The anhydrous compound is unstable and may decompose explosively.] It can be crystallized as a pentahydrate NaOCl·5H2O, a pale greenish-yellow solid which is not explosive and is stable if kept refrigerated.

Application

1. Bleaching,House­hold bleach is, in gen­eral, a so­lu­tion con­tain­ing 3-8% sodium hypoc hlorite.
2. Cleaning,Sodium hypo chlo­rite has destain­ing properties.[35] Among other ap­pli­ca­tions, it can be used to re­move mold stains, den­tal stains caused by flu­o­ro­sis,and stains on crockery.
3. Disinfection, Sodium hypo chlo­rite in so­lu­tion exhibits broad spectrum antimicrobial activity and is widely used in health­care fa­cil­i­ties in a variety of settings. It is usu­ally di­luted in water depending on its in­tended use.
4. Deodorizing, Sodium hypo chlo­rite has de­odor­iz­ing prop­er­ties, which go hand in hand with its clean­ing properties.
5. Waste water treatment, Sodium hypo chlo­rite so­lu­tions have been used to treat di­lute cyanide waste water, such as elec­tro­plat­ing wastes.

Storage
Store in a cool, dry, ventilated storage area with good drainage. Protect from physical damage. Keep out of sunlight, away from direct heat, water and incompatible materials. Do not wash out container and use it for other purposes. Observe all warnings and precautions stated on the container label. Wear personal protective equipment when handling, opening containers and using hypochlorite solution
Contact of sodium hypo chlorite solutions with metals may evolve flammable hydroge n gas. Containers may explode when heated due to release of chlorin e gas.Hypochlorite solutions are corrosive to common container materials such as stainless,steel and aluminium. The few compatible metals include titanium (which however is not compatible with dry chlorin e) and tantalum. Glass containers are safe. Some plastics and rubbers are affected too; safe choices include polyethylene (PE), high density polyethylene (HDPE, PE-HD),  (PP), some chlorinated and fluorinated polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF);as well as ethylene propylen e rubber, and Viton.Containers must allow venting of oxygen produced by decomposition over time, otherwise they may burst.

 

USES

Sanitation

Calciu m hypochlorite is commonly used to sanitize public swimming pools and disinfect drinking water. Generally the commercial substances are sold with a purity of 65% to 73% with other chemicals present, such as calcium chloride and calcium carbonate, resulting from the manufacturing process. In solution, calciu m hypochlorite could be used as a general purpose sanitizer, but due to calcium residue (making the water harder), sodium   hypochlorite (bleach) is usually preferred.

Organic chemistry

Ca lcium hypochlorite is a general oxidizing agent and therefore finds some use in organic chemistry. For instance the compound is used to cleave glycols, α-hydroxy carboxylic acids and keto acids to yield fragmented aldehydes or carboxylic acids. Calcium hyp ochlorite can also be used in the haloform reaction to manufacture chloro form. Calciu m hypochlorite can be used to oxidize thiol and sulfide byproducts in organic synthesis and thereby reduce their odour and make them safe to dispose of. The reagent used in organic chemistry is similar to the sanitizer at ~70% purity.
