Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a nonionic soluble cellulose ether. They have good thickening, suspending, binding, emulsifying, film-forming, stabilizing, dispersing and water-retaining properties. Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is soluble in cold water, but difficult to dissolve in hot water. It can quickly disperse in hot water at the initial stage and dissolve quickly when cooled. Their solutions are stable at high temperatures and do not gel.
They are less dispersible in water than methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC).
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is stable to common acids and bases. Alkali can speed up its dissolution and slightly increase the viscosity.
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) can improve the sag resistance of mortar, but prolong the setting time of cement.
