Lanthanum oxide is a white amorphous powder. The density of 6.51g/cm3. The melting point of 2217 DEG C. Boiling point is 4200 ºC. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in acid and generates the corresponding salts. Exposed to air is easy to absorb carbon dioxide and water, gradually become lanthanum carbonate. Burning lanthanum oxide hydrate release a lot of heat.
Mainly used as yttrium iron garnet additive and nuclear reactor control material, also used in the manufacture of special luminescent glass and infrared absorbing glass, and also used as glass colorant. It is obtained by separating and burning  erbium sulfate solution after reacting with alkali. Only Er2O3 is a stable compound. It is a powder with two structures of body-centered cubic and monoclinic. Er2O3 magnetic moment is also larger, 9.5M.B.. Other properties and preparation methods are the same as those of lanthanides. • 1:Neodymium metal, colorants for glass and ceramics, catalysts, laser crystals, fiber optic materials, etc.
  2:Mainly used for glass and capacitors. Colours glass delicate shades ranging from pure violet through wine-red and warm gray. Light transmitted through such glass shows unusually sharp absorption bands. The glass is used in astronomical work to produce sharp bands by which spectral lines may be calibrated. Glass containing neodymium is a laser material in place of ruby to produce coherent light.
