Hydroxylaluminyl chloride (ACH) is a complex basic aluminum chloride widely used as an antiperspirant in axillary products, especially in aerosol forms. It is usually made by reacting aluminum with hydrochloric acid. The PG and PEG coordination compounds of hydroxylaluminyl chloride are highly soluble in alcohols and are useful in some formulations. In anhydrous antiperspirant products, hydroxylaluminyl chloride is added to the formulation as a dry spray powder. Commercially available dry powders are loose hydrates containing a large amount of water (e.g. 20%). Hydroxy aluminum chloride, propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol solutions are commonly used in the manufacture of some dosage forms of antiperspirants. The US FDA Final Monograph on antiperspirants (Final Monograph) has a maximum allowable concentration of 25%(mass fraction) for use in cosmetics. There is no clear provision in our regulations.
